VikingJersey performing great in Colombia

Diego Sierra is a dairy farmer from the north of Antioquia, a part of Colombia located in the Andes, the longest continental mountain chain in the world.

Diego and his wife took over his family business with an open mind, willing to improve on a tradition started by his grand grandfather and now in its hundredth year.

With the implementation of a new strategy that included the use of VikingJersey, the herd is performing better. “I am impressed with the increase of the solids in the milk, the health and the fertility”, Sierra says.

Their herd is a little over 100 cows. This herd size makes the business manageable for them and administrative tasks are easy to delegate.

Positive fertility results

When it comes to fertility, Sierra is clear about the progress he has achieved: “More than half of the cows’ dismissals are related to fertility issues. The inclusion of VikingGenetics made it easier to solve the problem, and realize improvement in all traits”, he states.

When selecting the bulls, he picks the bulls with remarkable health: “A cow, no matter the breed, demands work. A sick cow costs money and labour and it is also stressful for us farmers to have a sick animal in the herd. General health is a trait worth focusing on.”

Guardians of the future

Raised between the city of Medellin and the farm, Diego developed a deep affection for the countryside. And from this affection, he heard his calling: he attended the university to become a zoo technician.
